Cocaine’s History | Forever Recovery

Cocaine has been used in its natural form for thousands of years. Cocaine is a derivative of the coca plant. This plant was the first form of cocaine used by South American indigenous people who chewed the leaves of the coca plant for both medical reasons and because of the spiritual enlightenment coca leaves were said to bring into a person’s life. Mummies have been found with coca leaves inside of their cheeks and with visual pictures in their burial tomb showing how the leaves were used in the burial process as either a healer or just for spiritual reasons. Other people, thousands of years ago, thought that coca leave chewing was a devils practice because of the effects it had on a person’s body and mind. Today, coca leaves are still chewed and smoked in certain parts of the world, but cocaine has taken over as a stimulant throughout every other part of the world.

Unlike the coca plant, cocaine is a mixture of harmful chemicals that can poison a person with in minutes of using. Cocaine was created in 1855 by the German chemist named Friedrich Gaedcke. He was one of many chemists who tried to isolate cocaine from the coca plant and because of his knowledge of chemistry, he successfully created the first form of the now illegal and deadly drug known as cocaine. For decades after cocaine was first created, it was considered a pure form of the cocaine leaves. It was used as an anesthetic, teeth whitener, over the counter pain reliever, and a way for people to have their slaves to work longer and harder during their days at work. In the late 1800’s, people were using cocaine for everything and it has also been added to things such as wine and the popular brand of soda known as Coca Cola.

Today, cocaine is no longer aloud to be put into Coca Cola, wine or any other product distributed to the public and it is also not used in the medical field at all. Over several months of mass production, people began to notice a change in the people who used or drank products with cocaine present. The people were becoming highly addicted to the substances. Even though that was good for the companies, a world wide addiction outbreak was emerging, therefore cocaine production was ceased and it was constituted illegal for production and use of any kind.
